Hey survivors!
I’m sure a lot of you saw the discussions about shutting some maps down to allow the rest to run smoother and to make way for Genesis. While our machine is more than capable of running several game servers (we even had some people willing to donate for new hardware), unfortunately the way ARK servers are run is stupid as hell and they really do need a dedicated machine for only 1 or 2 servers. It definitely doesn’t run as well as when we started them 2.5 years ago.
Eps and I had talked about shutting down Extinction and Aberration, as they are the least popular maps (as much as we don’t want to have to do that). However, we had a few people suggest shutting Valguero down instead as it doesn’t really have anything unique to offer and is hard to travel around on if you’re not using a flyer. We’ve decide to shut down Valguero only for now, and seeing as the temporary Eternal fun server is gone as well we will see how the other maps run without those two. We may need to shut Aberration down as well, however if Genesis doesn’t have all that Aberration has to offer (such as Rockwell boss) then we could run weekend events where we would either spawn Rockwell for people to fight or bring Aberration back up. We will just have to see how the servers run over the next month and make a decision based on that.
PLEASE NOTE! The maps will NOT be getting deleted, just turned off. Saved backups will still exist.
You guys have 2 weeks to move anything you want to keep off Valguero – I will be shutting it down on Thursday 13th of February at 6pm AWST.
Another thing we have been discussing is the Structures Plus mod. If you don’t already know, the original developer dropped the mod to work on the Homestead update for official ARK. It is open source, however due to the amount of upkeep it takes nobody has been willing to take it on. There has been one interested modder however we aren’t holding our breath, he is completely new to modding and there hasn’t been any official mention of it.
Because of this, we have been talking about wiping the maps and creating new ones without the S+ mod seeing as it is no longer getting updated which could be detrimental for our maps. There is a mod called Kewee.NET QoL Tools that includes some of the S+ features such as the nanny etc so we would definitely add that (Steam workshop link here). You would still keep all your dinos and resources and we would of course help you move with transmitters and whatever else. This is just up in the air at the moment, but I think it would be good especially for Ragnarok seeing as we have never done a server wipe before. This would obviously take a while, and we would probably need to do 1 map at a time. I assume most of the bases on our servers are built from S+. This is a big decision to make so definitely needs more discussion over the next couple of weeks! Of course we will update you on the situation once we reach a decision. Maybe it will be fun to start new bases? 😛
